SOCIETY BUILDING
At all levels of society there are a range of ongoing discourses concerned with various aspects of humanity’s wellbeing and progress. Whether through their local community or in the course of their studies, occupations or professions, Baha'is strive to participate fruitfully in such discourses, learning with and from others and offering their personal insights, informed by the Baha’i teachings, to the unfolding discussions. One example is the Baha'i inspired, Ethical Business Building the Future (ebbf), which is about people learning together how to develop values- and purpose-driven teams, workplaces and organisations, thereby contributing towards the betterment of society.
Baha’i efforts of social action seek to promote the social and material wellbeing of people of all walks of life, whatever their beliefs or background. Such efforts are motivated by the desire to serve humanity and contribute to constructive social change. One example is, BASED-UK, which serves to support social and economic development as part of the commitment to building a more unified, equitable and ever-advancing global civilisation. BASED-UK collaborates with overseas development agencies to build capacity in local populations to take charge of their own social and economic development through the application of spiritual principles and systems of knowledge.
The UK Baha'i Office of Public Affairs (OPA) represents the UK Baha'i community in its relationships with the British government, the media, the interfaith community and civil society. The overarching objective of the OPA is to contribute to the building of a more peaceful, equitable and unified society through advancing the evolution of thought, public opinion and policy on themes pertaining to social progress. At the heart of its work is the belief that the foundation for a peaceful, equitable and unified society is the principle of the oneness of humankind. The OPA's focus areas include: Social Cohesion, the Role of Religion in Society, the Freedom of Religion or Belief, and the Role of the Media.
The Association for Baha’i Studies (ABS) UK helps individuals and groups to apply the teachings of the Baha’i Faith to the needs of humanity. The activities of the ABS are open to all who are interested in studying, consulting, sharing, and learning together on diverse themes or fields of inquiry. Right now, the core focus is on creating and supporting special interest groups (SIGs): groups that correlate Baha’i teachings to discourses in society through activities that range from informal study and discussions to publications and seminars. Example of current SIGs are: Law, Economics, Education, Mental Health, the Environment, the Arts, Technology, Racism and Role of Religion in Society.
"There is no force on earth that can equal in its conquering power the force of justice and wisdom. There can be no doubt whatever that if the daystar of justice, which the clouds of tyranny have obscured, were to shed its light upon men, the face of the earth would be completely transformed.”
